How to Block Instagram Until Your To-Do List Is Done

Daily time limits are a blunt tool for Instagram: on iOS 26 they tended to end with a tap on "Ignore Limit", and on iOS 27 Screen Time can only limit the whole Social category, not Instagram alone. A rule that says "not until today's list is done" holds up better. Here is how to set it up on iPhone, for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, and what the free alternatives can and cannot do.

Published Updated

Short answer: use a task-based app blocker. In Weeklane, add today's tasks, tap Settings (the gear) → Task Lock and choose Instagram (plus TikTok, YouTube or instagram.com) in Apple's picker. They stay locked until today's list is checked off, then unlock on their own. Free alternatives, such as a friend holding your Screen Time passcode, unlock by time, not by work, and on iOS 27 Screen Time limits the whole Social category, not Instagram alone.

Step by step with Weeklane Task Lock

  1. Install Weeklane on your iPhone or iPad. The weekly planner is free. Task Lock is part of Weeklane Pro, which starts with a 7-day free trial.
  2. Plan today. Add three to five tasks you can clearly finish, such as "Send the invoice" or "Read chapter 4". Vague tasks like "Work on project" make the lock pointless.
  3. Give timed tasks their time. A task with a time later today only locks from that time. Put the gym at 18:00 and it will not keep Instagram locked at 9:00 once your morning tasks are done.
  4. Open Task Lock. Open Weeklane, tap Settings (the gear) and tap Task Lock, the first thing you see there. Allow Screen Time access when iOS asks. This is Apple's permission for blocker apps; it lets iOS enforce the lock.
  5. Choose the apps and websites to lock. In Apple's picker, tick Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, or a whole category such as Social, and add websites such as instagram.com. Weeklane receives anonymous tokens and never sees which apps or sites you picked.
  6. Decide on the break. The optional 15-minute break lets you open a locked app when you genuinely need it, for example to reply to a message. Many people keep it on for the first week and then switch it off.
  7. Work the list. When you open Instagram, you see a "Not yet." screen instead of the feed. Check off the last task for today and the apps unlock automatically.

You can turn Task Lock off at any time, but you have to open the planner to do it, so you see exactly what is left before you decide. That moment is often enough.

Do not forget the browser

Instagram, TikTok and YouTube all work in Safari too. Task Lock can lock websites as well as apps: add instagram.com (and tiktok.com or youtube.com) in the same Screen Time picker, and the sites stay locked along with the apps until today's list is done. Without a blocker, the only built-in option is Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web & Games → Web Content → Limit Adult Websites → Never Allow. That is a permanent block, not a task-based one, so only add sites there you are happy to lose in the browser entirely.

The same rule works for any app; our complete guide to app blocking on iPhone compares it with Screen Time, Focus and Shortcuts. If the real issue is the habit rather than one app, try the to-do-first routine to stop doomscrolling, and see what an hour a day of scrolling adds up to in the free screen time calculator.

Free alternatives, and how far they go

A Screen Time limit with a friend's passcode

On iOS 27, set a Time Allowance for the Social Media category, which covers Instagram (Settings → Screen Time → Time Allowances), then ask a friend or partner to set the Screen Time passcode under Manage Screen Time → Lock Screen Time Settings, so you cannot raise or switch off the allowance yourself. You cannot set an allowance for Instagram alone on iOS 27: the limit covers the whole category, and when it runs out there is no Ignore Limit button. On iOS 26 or earlier, use Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit, where you can pick Instagram alone, and switch on Block at End of Limit; when the time is up, only your friend can give you more. It is free and strong, but it unlocks by the clock, not by your work, and you have to ask someone each time you need an exception. If you set up Screen Time Passcode Recovery with your Apple Account, you can reset the code yourself, so skip that step if you want it to hold.

A Shortcuts automation that bounces you out

In the Shortcuts app you can create an automation that runs when Instagram is opened, checks whether any of today's reminders are still open, and if so shows a notification and opens Reminders instead. It is free and surprisingly satisfying, but Instagram still opens for a moment, and the automation can be switched off in seconds without a passcode. Our Shortcuts guide walks through the full recipe.

Other task-based blockers

A few other apps link blocking to tasks. Bloko, for example, describes itself on the App Store as blocking apps until you finish your tasks, and one sec can link to the Structured planner to block apps while tasks are unfinished. Features and pricing change often, so check each listing before you commit.

Frequently asked

Can I block Instagram until my homework or work is done?

Yes, with a task-based blocker. In Weeklane, add today's tasks, tap Settings (the gear) → Task Lock and choose Instagram (and instagram.com, if you use it in Safari). It stays locked while today has open tasks and unlocks automatically when the last one is checked off. It works on iPhone and iPad.

Can Screen Time block Instagram until my tasks are done?

No. Screen Time unlocks by time: Time Allowances (App Limits on iOS 26) reset each day and a Screen Time Schedule (Downtime) ends on the clock. It has no idea whether your to-do list is done. On iOS 27 it also cannot limit Instagram on its own: Time Allowances cover whole categories such as Social, not single apps. For that you need a third-party blocker that links the lock to tasks and lets you pick individual apps.

Does this work for TikTok and YouTube too?

Yes. In Apple's app picker you can choose any installed app, or a whole category such as Social or Entertainment. If you also use those services in Safari, add their websites in the same picker and Task Lock locks them too.

Can Weeklane see what I do on Instagram?

No. Task Lock uses Apple's Screen Time API, so Weeklane receives anonymous tokens for the apps and websites you choose and cannot see which ones they are or what you do in them.

Is there an Android version?

Not of Task Lock. The Weeklane planner works on Android, but Task Lock is available on iPhone and iPad only.
