Can ChatGPT Manage Your To-Do List? 3 Setups That Work
ChatGPT is good at turning a mess into a list. Keeping that list is another matter. Here is what works today, from plain prompts to a connected planner that ChatGPT can actually edit.
Published Updated
Many articles about ChatGPT and to-do lists were written for the early Tasks feature or stop at prompts. This guide covers the three setups that work in October 2026, what each is good for, and where each one breaks.
Setup 1: Prompts only
The simplest setup is no setup. You paste your tasks into a chat and ask ChatGPT to sort, prioritise or plan them. These three prompts cover most needs:
Turn this into a to-do list. One task per line, each starting with a verb. Do not add anything I did not write. List anything unclear as a question at the end. [paste your notes]
Here is my to-do list. Pick the three tasks that matter most this week and explain each choice in one sentence. Mark anything that can wait until next week. [paste your list]
Spread these tasks across Monday to Sunday. At most 3 tasks per day, the most important first, and keep Sunday free as a buffer. Respect these deadlines: [list them]. [paste your list]
The weakness is memory. The list lives in one chat, ChatGPT cannot tick anything off for you, and a week later you are scrolling to find it. Prompts are great for the thinking step; for a longer version with a worked example, see how to brain dump to AI.
Setup 2: ChatGPT Tasks
ChatGPT Tasks lets ChatGPT run a prompt at a set time and notify you, for example "remind me to call the dentist at 9 tomorrow" or "every Monday at 8, give me a short plan for the week". It is handy for single reminders and recurring briefings.
It is not a to-do list, though. There are no days to look at, no checkboxes and no way to move a batch of tasks to Friday. Availability and limits have changed since launch, so check OpenAI's help center for what your plan includes today.
Setup 3: Connect a to-do app
This is the setup that turns ChatGPT into something that manages your list. A connected app gives ChatGPT actions like "add a task" or "move these to Friday", and the changes show up in the app on your phone. There are two ways in.
- Apps from ChatGPT's directory. Some to-do apps are listed and connect in a couple of clicks. Todoist is one; its help page has the steps.
- Custom MCP server. Any app with an MCP server can be added by hand with its server URL. Which ChatGPT plans can add custom servers, and whether they can write as well as read, has changed over time, so check OpenAI's help page for your plan.
Connecting Weeklane to ChatGPT
Weeklane is waiting for review in OpenAI's plugin directory, so for now you add it yourself as a custom MCP server. It takes about two minutes.
- Add the server. In ChatGPT, open Plugins, choose Add, then Add custom MCP server.
- Paste the URL. Use https://mcp.weeklane.app/mcp and choose OAuth as the authentication.
- Create the plugin. Accept the notice about custom servers and choose Create as a plugin.
- Connect and sign in. Click Connect, sign in with the same Apple or Google account you use in Weeklane, and click Allow.
We tested this on a ChatGPT Plus account on 22 October 2026. Reading and writing both worked: adding tasks, moving them, repeating tasks, Task Lock and undo. ChatGPT asks for your approval before some actions, such as changing Task Lock. On the Weeklane side you need Weeklane 3.0 or later, sign-in with Apple or Google in the app, and Weeklane Pro (lifetime unlock included). The Plan with AI page always has the current steps.
The three setups compared
| Prompts only | ChatGPT Tasks | Connected to-do app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the list lives | In one chat | In ChatGPT, as scheduled tasks | In your to-do app, on your phone |
| Tick off tasks | No | No | Yes |
| See the week by day | Only if you ask again | No | Yes, if the app has a week view |
| Move or reschedule tasks | Rewrite the list | Edit each task | "Move everything to Friday" |
| Reminders | No | Yes, ChatGPT notifies you | Yes, from the app, like your own reminders |
| Setup time | None | None | A few minutes |
| Best for | Sorting and thinking | Single reminders and briefings | Running your week |
Prompts that work once a planner is connected
What's on my list this week? Add these to my week and show me the list before you add anything: [paste tasks] Move everything I didn't finish today to tomorrow. Make "team check-in" repeat every Monday at 9 with a reminder 10 minutes before. Turn on Task Lock from 9:00 with my Social list. Undo that last change.
Weeklane's connector works with your personal tasks only, not shared projects, and can add or edit up to 50 tasks in one go. Task Lock is iPhone and iPad only: ChatGPT can turn it on or off, set the start time, allow or turn off breaks and switch between saved block lists, but it cannot see or choose which apps are blocked.
ChatGPT or Claude for managing tasks?
Both are good at the planning conversation, and both can work with a connected to-do app, so the app you already use matters more than the assistant. The main difference today is setup. Claude has a reviewed directory where Weeklane is listed, so connecting is one click. In ChatGPT, Weeklane is added as a custom server for now. Claude can also work with Apple Reminders through its iPhone app. Our guide to connecting a to-do list to Claude covers the Claude side in detail.
If you are still choosing the app itself, compare Weeklane and Todoist or see the minimalist weekly planner apps. For work-heavy weeks, a one-page weekly work plan pairs well with any of them.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT have a to-do list?
Not a built-in one you can tick off. ChatGPT can write lists in a chat, and ChatGPT Tasks can schedule reminders and recurring prompts, but neither keeps a to-do list. For that, connect a to-do app.
Can ChatGPT manage my to-do list or add tasks to my app?
Yes, if you connect the app. Apps from ChatGPT's directory, such as Todoist, or apps added as a custom MCP server, such as Weeklane, let ChatGPT add, move, edit and complete real tasks. What your ChatGPT plan allows can change, so check OpenAI's help center.
Can ChatGPT set reminders on my phone?
ChatGPT Tasks can notify you at a set time. A connected to-do app can also set reminders: in Weeklane, ChatGPT can give any task a reminder, and the phone schedules it like one you added yourself.
Can ChatGPT add things to my Apple or Google calendar?
Only through a connector for that calendar, and support depends on your plan, so check OpenAI's help center. For tasks rather than events, a connected to-do app is the simpler route; Weeklane's connector manages tasks, not calendar events.
Is ChatGPT or Claude better for planning tasks?
Both plan well. Choose based on your to-do app and setup: Claude has Weeklane in its connector directory and works with Apple Reminders on iPhone; ChatGPT works with Weeklane as a custom MCP server today.
Is it safe to give ChatGPT access to my tasks?
Give it only what you need, read what it plans to change before you approve, and know how to disconnect. In Weeklane, every AI change is listed under Settings → Plan with AI, where you can undo the last one or revoke access. Weeklane does not sell your tasks or use them to train AI; the assistant's own privacy terms apply.
Give ChatGPT a real week to work with
Weeklane shows your week as seven short day lists on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. The weekly planner is free; Plan with AI is part of Weeklane Pro.
